Oxford claims the world record for solar panel efficiency

    25% efficiency in a 421 watt perovskite-silicon tandem cell, produced using “standard mass production gear”. Current solar panels sit around 20%, so this would be 1/4 more power output for same installation area.

     It’s not commercialized yet, but starting to look like random cells giving meaningful efficiency gains really are on the immediate horizon. 

     No word on degradation / panel lifespan, though, which has been a continued concern for perovskites. Or, at this point, cost compared to ever cheaper silicon cells. 

     Still, even if it’s signfiicantly more expensive per panel, higher efficiency panels could be very attractive for applications where labor costs dominate and space is constrained, like rooftop solar.
