New FTC ‘Click-to-Cancel’ Rule Marks Latest Pro-Consumer Win by Lina Khan — “Consumers shouldn’t have to navigate a Rube Goldberg machine to get out of a subscription they purchased with a keystroke,” said one advocate.

  1. An agency actually doing something to help regular people instead of corporations. You won’t get that from a Trump administration.

Lina Khan is one of the best things to come out of the Biden administration. I still suspect that Bernie or Warren pulled some strings behind the scenes to get her into that position.

  3. We must pressure our Representatives to make sure an incoming Harris administration knows that to remove Lina would be a slap in the face to Democratic praxis.

  4. Next outlaw “free trials” that require your credit card then automatically charge you when the “trial” period is over without warning.

Nobody is more angry about this “governmental overreach” than poor conservatives whose email is filled with spam and phishing scams.

  6. *”Melissa Holyoak, one of the two Republican commissioners who voted against approving the rule, expressed doubt about the legality of the rule and claimed that Khan was rushing into action in order to help Vice President Kamala Harris win the presidential election: “Less than a month from election day, the Chair is hurrying to finish a rule that follows through on a campaign pledge made by the Chair’s favored presidential candidate.””*

Translation: “the corporate lobbyists shoving money in my pockets don’t want this.”

It’s liek you can walk into any cell phone store, walk out with a new contract and phone, but to cancel you gotta call and navagiate confusing menus and be put on hold forever.

Lina Kahn is the anti-Merrick Garland.

She got up in that job and did the damn thing without being afraid of pissing off the right wing (and even some of them like her).

  10. Ugh, I just had to do this with Comcast. “Can you tell me why you’re cancelling?” No. “Can you tell me how much you’re paying for your new service?” No. “What is the speed of your new service?” No. “Our records show that you aren’t using a lot of bandwidth and can save money with another plan.” No. “Are you interested in Peacock?” No. “I need to put you on hold for one moment” No.

Anyway, I feel bad for the call center people in India who are trying to make an honest living and will now be out of a job.

The worst is siriusxm where you have to get in touch with an agent just to unsubscribe.

Biden’s done very well for consumer protections. He at least tried to deal with the Ticketmaster fee bullshit, and now this. I should just log in, cancel my shit if I barely use it, and go on with my day. But no, I had to sit by the phone at work trying to cancel my gym membership or Sirius XM. Fuck that. People have shit to do lol

  12. Now do gyms next.

Years ago I had a membership to LA Fitness. I was already not using the membership nearly as often I should and I moved to a location where there wasn’t really a convenient LA Fitness nearby. So I try to cancel.

First I visit the website, there’s nothing on the website that allows you to cancel.

Next, I call the gym and tell them I want to cancel my membership. They tell me they cannot do it over the phone and I must come in in person to cancel the membership. I explain to them that I have moved _(I didn’t tell them it was only about 15 minutes further away)_ and coming in physically wasn’t a good option. They tell me again it’s impossible to do over the phone or on the website, I must come to the location **that I signed up at** to cancel.

Take a moment to imagine if I hadn’t moved only 15 minutes further away. What if I had moved hours or more away? If I had moved from Texas to California I would have to spend hundreds of dollars to fly my ass back to Texas, cancel the membership, and then fly back home just to cancel a gym membership.

Anyways, I come to the gym and tell them I want to cancel. They ask me why and I tell them I’ve moved and they’re no longer convenient to me. They push back telling me there’s a location everywhere and ask me where I lived. We go back and forth, I won’t tell them my new address, and they are doing everything within their power not to let me cancel. They finally give in…and print off a piece of paper.

I have to fill out that piece of paper and physically mail it to their corporate office and eventually they will process the cancellation. Really, fuck LA Fitness.

  13. Few things I would like to see:

    1. All methods available to sign up should also be available to cancel.
    2. It should take same number of clicks to cancel as it takes to sign up.
    3. I want confirmation email with request no when I cancel it.
    4. If the subscription runs through the end of the month, another email on my last day.
    5. I want option to opt out of any marketing calls (like how ATT called me 5 times asking why I cancelled when I kept telling them they don’t service my new address.)
    6. I want all CC info and account details deleted.
    7. No Dark patters, the cancel button should always be on the left and same color as back button and same font size.
    8. I want it written into law that if you sign up at place that has paper forms, you should have a right to get a copy and they should also provide instructions on how to cancel, along with the form to cancel and in writing how long will they take to process the cancellation. (Mostly aimed towards gyms)
    9. I do not want reminder follow up if I cancelled a signup process halfway through. (Netflix send me daily emails when I entered my email differently (gmail feature))

  14. I’m wondering what teeth are in this rule, how it’ll be enforced. Hasn’t been in the last three articles on the topic I’ve read.

  15. Ha!!

Get FUCKED SirusXM. A service I have been tempted to pick up again, but the absolutely fucking nightmare of canceling the service will have me boycott them for the rest of my natural life.

I have never, EVER been thrown through so many hoops trying to cancel something in my life. That shit SHOULD be illegal.

  16. It tells you how good she is at her job that even democrat tech people are hoping she gets replaced in the next administration. (Because she’s loyal to the common person not to the tech bros, regardless of whose shirt they wear)

But I don’t think she will if Harris wins. Stuff like this is why.

  17. I remember having to call NY Times ON THE PHONE, VOICE to cancel my subscription. I even explained to the poor guy I talked to (I don’t blame him for his employer being shitty) to please write in his notes that this makes me unlikely to ever subscribe again because now I know how much of a pain it is to cancel.

Of course since they’re now permanently kneeling to Trump I’ll likely never subscribe again even with this change, but still. I’m glad it’ll be easier for people to end subscriptions now.
