*Nearly 100 Republicans voted against a government funding bill in the heart of hurricane season.*

When Congress was debating a short-term government funding resolution last month, Democrats pushed for the bill to include billions in additional disaster-relief funding. A cohort of far-right conservatives favored a stripped-down resolution that didn’t include the extra disaster-relief money — and ultimately got their way.

The approved measure did, however, extend the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s funding through the end of the year; it just did not infuse FEMA — which is already operating at a deficit — with any additional funding in the heart of hurricane season. “The right-wingers here, the MAGA crowd, even after disasters happen, they have opposed disaster aid for communities in need,” Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.) told Politico after the stop-gap bill passed.

  3. I have a low stakes conspiracy that the reason so many mayoral elections for Midwest cities take place in May is because they want to vote out mayors who aren’t quickly filling potholes after Springtime thaws ruin roads.

In this instance, it’s good to see the realtime consequences of people who vote against their constituents’ interests. Often, there’s a months or years delay from this sort of thing. But like pothole season, we get to see how well our politicians respond.

  4. The Florida Republicans who voted against extended FEMA support:

    Rep. Aaron Bean
    Rep. Gus Bilirakis
    Rep. Kat Cammack
    Rep. Byron Donalds
    Rep. Matt Gaetz
    Rep. Laurel Lee
    Rep. Anna Paulina Luna
    Rep. Cory Mills
    Rep. Bill Posey
    Rep. Mike Waltz
    Rep. Daniel Webster

Let’s hope their votes translates into disaster for their political careers, that would be the one positive outcome of this hurricane season. I’m not that optimistic, though. Sooner or later they’ll figure out a way to blame the disaster and response on FEMA, and emerge blameless.

  6. The vote is irrelevant, they’ll get their money and still get to burnish their Maga bona fides by claiming they ‘stood up’ to DC and the Pres.

  7. HAH! Who’s bullshitting who? Since when do RW voters hold their elected reps accountable? WTF has GQP House members done since taking control almost 2 yrs. ago?

Name one meaningful piece of legislation that republiquans passed to improve the avg American’s standard of living? NAME JUST ONE!

*”Now they’re (GQP reps) facing disaster?”* hahahaha! What a crock of shit!

..but they’ll all get in line for their socialism because only *their* needs matter.

  9. Gurney_Hackman on

LOL you think their voters care? Their voters care about drag queens and Haitians.

No, *they’ll* be in Cancun. It’s their constituents that are facing disaster.

  11. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/florida-republicans-funding-fema-hurricane-helene-milton-1235130244/) reduced by 86%. (I’m a bot)

    > The concessions still weren't enough for the nearly 100 Republicans in the House and Senate who voted against the resolution that passed – and the $20 billion funding base it allocated to FEMA as Hurricane Helene bore down on the East Coast.

    > Some of the Republicans who voted against funding FEMA are now calling for more money.

    > All 11 Florida House Republicans who voted against keeping the government – and FEMA – funded last month just days later signed a bipartisan letter addressed to Biden calling for "Direct federal assistance" to the state in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

  12. The representatives aren’t facing disaster, but their constituents most certainly are. The republicans are an un-American embarrassment to our country.

Getting ready to blame the people who don’t have control of that house in 5.4.3.2

  14. Friendly-Profit-8590 on

Let’s see. It’s not god. It isn’t us. That means it must be the democrats who are to blame.

  15. These need to be highly targeted ads on Fox/etc. Every constituent should see the name of their rep and if they voted for or against FENA aid in recent weeks. But a face and name next to a big red NO and ensure that’s how people vote.

    Vote NO on GOP.
