Ukraine will not renew its gas transit agreement with Russia after the contract expires at the end of 2024, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal told Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fiсo during a meeting “Ukraine’s strategic goal is to impose sanctions on the Russian gas molecule, to deprive the Kremlin of revenues from the sale of hydrocarbons, for which the aggressor finances the war. We call on all European countries to completely refuse oil and gas from the Russian Federation. We understand the acute dependence of some states, in particular Slovakia, on this resource. But we count on a gradual diversification of supplies,” Shmygal said.

I’m not an expert on international law, but the Russian agression would probably be reason enough for Ukraine to be legally able to terminate the agreement.

Anyway, Hungary, Austria and Slovakia have had plenty of time to adapt already, it’s time to stop the transit of Russian gas.

What a horrible decision. How could Ukraine do this? It’s not like the country they had the agreement with is the same one currently invading them. I just don’t understand some of these geopolitical decisions…

  4. I’m a little surprised they didn’t just cut it off when they invaded, but I’m sure Europe begged them not to. I’m also surprised it hasn’t been vandalized by nationalists outside of government control.
