It took them too long and it’s no longer a pressing American political issue so it’s not getting them any brownie points. So sad.

Imagine if al this money was spent on reducing the importation of illegal guns, which account for the vast vast majority of gun crimes

If only we could pursue data driven policy and apply resources to the actual problematic scenarios around firearms use in our society.

Hint, legislation targeting the legal market hasn’t been effective.

    Conclusions

The finding of an association between unemployment, low income rates, the rates of aboriginal population, and provinces with a higher rate of suicide underscores and suggests areas for directed public health and harm reduction programs. No overall mortality reduction, but a shift from suicide by firearm in females and males age 45 and older to hanging, associated with current gun control programs, was found. This suggests that gun control methods to reduce suicide by firearms may have benefits but further actions to reduce suicide by controlling for other methods and suicide prevention programs could lower suicide rates in Canada. No associated reductions in homicide with increasing firearms regulations suggests alternative approaches are necessary to reduce homicide by firearm.

Real action towards reducing the number of firearm deaths is necessary and calls to reduce firearms prevalence in the country have once again become a social and political issue [30,31]. Multifaceted strategies to reduce mortality associated with firearms may be required. Steps to reduce youth gang membership and violence through diversion and educational programs have shown promising results [32]. As well community based suicide prevention programs such as training of family physicians in the detection and treatment of depression and discussions about firearms, campaigns aimed at increasing awareness about depression, and follow-up of individuals who attempted suicide may result in lives saved [33]. Outreach to groups for which access to care may be a particular issue, such as Aboriginals, is of primary concern [34].

Canada currently has the strictest gun control in its history and gun violence is still steadily rising, as it has been for the past decade. The public just isn’t informed enough to come to the *extremely obvious* conclusion that the only feature of Canadian gun control that actually helps public safety is the licensing system, and that the expensive, time consuming, and legally onerous process of regulating the minutiae of barrel length, muzzle energy, magazine capacity, model, etc. is totally pointless. All of this stuff becomes even more futile than it already is as 3d printing and small scale manufacturing gets better and cheaper.

The pearl clutching morons that dictate our country’s gun policy are not serious people and need to be kept away from the levers of power wherever possible. Over and over the world demonstrates that the only thing that works is keeping guns out of the wrong hands.

  5. What if I told you the liberals had no intention of reducing firearm related crimes and were only pandering to their core voter base who are too ignorant to understand we already have some of the strictest firearm laws in the world 🤔

  6. Are you telling me that the government using taxpayers money to buy me a new “assault style rifle” isn’t going to help reduce gun violence?! I’m shocked I tell you!

The Globe editorial starts by correctly calling the Liberals on using the Portapique massacre as the excuse the government used to start this current ineffectual ban.

Just as a reminder, that the mass murderer did not legally acquire any firearms and in fact smuggled firearms across the border. For all of the Liberals’ bans, it would not have prevented the massacre.

Indeed, the killer could have been easily prevented if only police had followed up on the various tips about his instability, his abuse of his girlfriend and his display of his illegally acquired firearms to his friends and associates.

Without knowing any facts, the government, with the support of a partisan RCMP commissioner, leapt at the chance to make a performative gesture that only impacts a group of people who already follow the law.

I wish the Globe editorial didn’t allow these facts to fall into a memory hole.

How about we follow current laws?

  8. Another non-issue because after all who doesn’t want “gun control”? Same as who doesn’t want clean drinking water or less pollution or any of the other non issues.

  9. The Liberals and their consultants don’t care about the legal changes that have occurred since Poly. They’ve convinced a not insignificant portion of the population that our rules are basically the same as Americans. That our problems are basically the same as Americans too. The reality is so far from that, but many people can’t seem to comprehend that Trudeau and his cronies would lie about something like this.

If they ever do figure it out, which currently would require listening to *crazy gun nuts* it will further erode confidence in governments.
