  1. All I know is that I have to work while all the people who work for the federal government get an extra holiday

  2. Joseph_Jean_Frax on

Indigenous People : “The Federal government is guilty of cultural genocide!”

Federal government : “You are absolutely right. Let’s give ourselves a day off.”

  3. T&R is the only truely Canadian holiday. It has to do with our history, culture and people.

Somehow the govt screwed up making a holiday. Buffoons one and all!

  4. Meh, the fad has already passed.

Yesterday’s final Blue Jays game of 2024 was a good case in point. I was at the game. In past years, they would have some sort of Orange Shirt ceremony on-field, and mention it as part of their full wokeness. This year, not only was the “land acknowledgement”, which used to be immediately before the national anthems, been moved to something like 30 minutes before the game begins (as has been the case all year), when the stands are still mostly empty, the day itself had no mention at all.

There were some groups in the stands clad in orange shirts and with banners trying to get attention. The cameras for the in-stadium Jumbotron intentionally ignored them, and made sure the cameras never pointed in their direction during the between inning promos. They didn’t want them to hijack the Jays fan appreciation weekend since it was the final game of the year

  5. On this day or recognition, I will pose a question for our collective consideration:

If the Indigenous peoples were ever to organize themselves as did the Zionists roughly a hundred years ago—allowing them to eventually establish a state in their homeland with the autonomy, UN support and foreign military backing to defend itself from those who would be displaced by its creation—might the Indigenous people expect more support from regular Canadians?

EDIT: Or less support? And why? Perhaps we can reconcile our individual views and potential biases using these questions as a theoretic framework.

EDIT 2: Interestingly, people will upvote and downvote but not engage in or advance the conversation. And why?

  6. I don’t understand what truth we are trying to get out that isn’t already out. Could somebody explain? Sincere question

  7. “Officials estimated that the day off will cost the federal government almost $166 million each year, mainly in lost productivity, and another $223 million for federally regulated employers.”

Personally I think $400 million could have been spent better to directly help people than giving privileged government employees the day off.

  8. It’s always sad to see the reactions in these threads, but it’s good to remember Reddit isn’t real life.

All the bitterness and petty anger you see here isn’t how Canadians feel about indigenous people or the issues they still face.

It’s a good to reflect on that I suppose.
