A fortnight ago, there would have been no questioning the devotion Lebanese Shia Muslims felt for Iran.
Just as for their brethren across the Middle East, Iran has long been their political and spiritual lodestar. “What the Vatican is for you Christians, Iran is for us Shia – only more so,” one is often told by Shias in [Lebanon](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/lebanon/) and elsewhere in the region.
Yet with Iran shying away from direct confrontation with Israel even as [Hezbollah](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/hizbollah/) – its creation and most important proxy – lurches ever deeper into crisis, there are mounting signs that, in Lebanon at least, loyalty has begun to slip.
Among this community of the newly homeless stretching the length of the three-mile esplanade, it is not difficult to find discontent directed at [Iran](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/iran/), with emotions ranging from philosophical disappointment to angry accusations of betrayal and outlandish conspiracy theories.
Im confused! What do you with a terrorist organization before they get annihilated?

They still got the support of western leftist college students.
I don’t think they can help against the IDF coming their way though.

Reap what you sow Hezbollah! Now is the time for the Lebanese people to rise up and shut down Hezbollah so they can rebuild and restructure their government and move forward. Gaza should stand as a stark example of what could happen if they don’t make changes.

Hezbollah is literally the cannon fodder of the Iranian regime.
One of the purposes of it (among advancing Shia influence in the Middle East) is to deter Israel from targeting Iran itself by having an “Iranian branch” near Israel to sacrifice when needed…

I guess it must be Inshallah. I guess there is nothing you can do but embrace the suck since it’s God’s will. Maybe if you lay down your weapons and ask for help, a few neighbors may help. Maybe not. To stop shooting rockets at Israel may be a good start.

Beirut’s famous Corniche, a seaside promenade where fashionable residents of the Lebanese capital have long come to take the air, has for the past few days become a refuge for many Shia Muslims fleeing [Israeli bombing raids](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/09/30/israel-hezbollah-hamas-war-gaza-latest-news/) on the city’s southern suburbs.
“If Iran had wanted to help, they would have helped a long time ago,” said Hana Mrad, a 43-year-old housewife who has been sleeping in her car with her two daughters since the air strikes that killed [Hassan Nasrallah](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/09/28/hezbollah-hassan-nasrallah-killed-in-beirut-israel-says/), Hezbollah’s leader, on Friday evening.
“Everyone has abandoned us and now Iran has, too.”
