> “You hear the jets overhead; we have been striking all day. This is both to prepare the ground for your possible entry and to continue degrading Hezbollah,” Herzi Halevi told troops.
> “Today, Hezbollah expanded its range of fire, and later today, they will receive a very strong response. Prepare yourselves.”

Israel is really addicted to war now..

They’re very clearly preparing to go in to push Hezbollah further back into Lebanon and away from the border and create a buffer zone. Hezbollah attacked northern Israel unprovoked and displaced citizens since October 8th. Israel just wants to stop them and restore safe use of their land.

I thought maybe Iarael was hitting Hebollah so hard with the intention of using the military success as political cover for pulling out of Gaza without destroying hamas completely.
We will see.

My best guess?
Israel will seek to drive Hezbollah out of southern Lebanon and then occupy it. There will be no wider effort to “destroy” Hezbollah or take Beirut.
Israel will work to shift the costs of a low-intensity conflict onto its adversaries. If intermittent rocket and artillery exchanges are to be the status quo then they will be occurring on Lebanese territory and at the expense of Lebanese civilians.
How that pans out I have no idea, though Israel’s history with the Golan Heights and West Bank should give the Lebanese pause. If the war continues long enough on Lebanese territory the occupation may become permanent.
