Who decides what is “mis-information”?

“Experts” assigned by the government, or self-appointed experts?

No offence to Albo, but the freedom of Australians to express themselves without censorship is important.

  1. Not much point in expressing “free speech” if you aren’t even doing the basic reading and citation work to understand background of the two perspectives.

Seriously what is the context of the story that made Albo publish the things he said?

On a platform like X, isn’t flagged misinformation posts typically accompanied by a link/source.. I don’t think they’ll have someone from the Gov sitting there going “yeah nah, I disagree, so I’ll fine em without evidence”. Also, there’s already censorship on X…. What’s your concern?

The whole “who gets to decide the truth” thing is regularly evoked by people looking to over-simplify an issue in order to paint it as a bad idea. Of course, if it is some faceless government body with no transparency looking to censor dissenting views of the government, it would be a bad thing. However, this is Australia, and we are at no risk of that happening.

But muh free speech? The bill is against deliberate misinformation. In an age where AI can be used to make videos of whoever you want saying whatever you want, combatting misinformation is pretty important for a functioning society. If you feel like being able to deliberately spread lies in order to sway people should be a protected part of your free speech, then imo you can fuck right off.

No one is going to stop people from criticising the government, or giving a contrary view. If you think that’s what the government is doing – leading us towards some dystopian future or something, then you just aren’t a serious person.

The fact is, there is a balance to be struck here. If you don’t think there’s a problem with social media deliberately accounts spreading lies (and the way that bots are used on platforms like twitter for a post to gain traction is blatant), then I think you should really rethink what the real threats to our society are.
