Wastewater injection needs to be outlawed ASAP. A bipartisan bill needs to be passed in Texas to eliminate this. Operators need to be incentivized through regulation, fines and penalties to repurpose wastewater to non-potable water at a minimum.
If Texas passed a law today that operators had to pay a $2.00 tax per barrel of wastewater injected the State would never have to worry about the fresh water supply again. The fact that they do not do this or something like it baffles me.
I thought the O&G companies would try and capitalize on wastewater treatment long ago not just for good PR but an additional source of revenue/future industry transition but it seems they need some encouragement.
