Maybe this is a good sub to ask…what’s the economic benefit (across society) for doing rooftop solar vs having those same panels being owned and used by the utility?
I can see that roofs are spare “land” but they’re also in random places and orientations. They’re also not maintained well, since that has to be done by homeowners. I can also see that there should be less grid capacity needed. But why is everyone seemingly so certain that these things net out to the good?

I really hope co-located energy storage for a huge part of this is going to be a feature. Solar is great, but even better for home owners to be able to offset peaker plants/grid stress.
