The US was China’s major partner until the Obama tariffs ended the relationship in which the US was supplying polysilicon made with cheap Gulf of Mexico natural gas and hydroelectric in places like Washington state. When the Obama administration chose to put tariffs on Chinese solar, the Chinese began making their own polysilicon and became independent of US supplies.

    Then, of course, Trump and now Biden doubled down on those tariffs as a new era of an isolationist US attempted to hide from the changes that were taking place internationally and place the US on the path of a xenophobic hermit kingdom ironically trading places with what China used to be. From solar panels, to solar water heaters, batteries, electric vehicles –all of these technologies are prohibited with tariffs in the US now. It’s amazing how the citizens calmly allow this to happen and how both parties support the identical policies with no accountability at all.
