The Sudanese army used Mi-24 helicopters in an unconventional way. Instead of approaching the target and firing directly, which exposes it to enemy fire, the helicopters launch missiles upwards so that these missiles take a ballistic trajectory, which increases their range and keeps the helicopters out of the range of fire.

  1. unconventional? mf’s been doing that since they started strapping rocket pods to helicopters in the 60’s

  2. The Mi-24 has a ballistic computer exactly for this purpose, unguided lobbing attacks are not strictly Sudanese and are not new.
