What’s the point of speaking in a language the majority of people in parliament don’t understand? People are even allowed to make speeches in their indigenous language if it is then accompanied by a version in Danish. This is empty political posturing to ride anti-colonialism cultural waves coming out of North America, wasting everyone’s time. Even though Greenland can obtain independence with a simple referendum, and 78% of Greenlanders don’t want to leave the Danish Realm if it means a decrease in living standards…which is guaranteed since the Danish government provides the money for 2/3rds of Greenland’s government spending.
The classic “virtue signal and create tensions between ethnic groups even though there is no desire or reason for independence”

> Høgh-Dam gave an eight-minute speech in Greenlandic. She had beforehand distributed a translation of her speech to the members of the assembly.
Then…what’s the problem? Can they not read? If she provided a translation I don’t see why there should be an issue with her giving a speech in her native language of the country she is representing

Doesn’t Greenland have the legal ability to leave whenever they want?

She needs people to pay attention to Greenland. That’s why she did the stunt. We’re talking about Greenland. Therefore, she did her job well.

Interesting as Greenlandic is the official language of Greenland and is what kids are taught in apparentlyÂ

People are missing the point.
She is doing this in order to highlight the need for parliament to offer simultaneous translation services. As the article says:
> Høgh-Dam demands simultaneous interpretation.
Simultaneous interpretation is fairly standard in other multilingual parliaments, for example Switzerland, South Africa and of course the European Parliament.
In South Africa it’s also a point of contention because only Afrikaans and English are offered, not the actual indigenous languages.

She’s about as Inuit as Lebron James is Danish.

She does not look Inuit at all. Interesting. Anyway, this is a piece of non-news.

I think her request should be granted by subtracting necessary funds from money Denmark sends to Greenland.
If this is how Greenland voters want to use their funds, let them have it.

Language is for communication, that’s all I want to emphasize. My personal principle is to serve the most people at presentation. If I am with a group of cats, I try to meow most of time.
