Was really surprised to see the pictures and videos of it. Navy crews are usually good about setting water tight boundaries and stopping flooding.

I don’t think you can become masters of the sea when you have so little to play/practice with in the first place. Bigger countries have much more Aux/Logistics support systems for their Navy.
NZ Fleet – They didn’t have much to being with:
2 frigates
2 offshore patrol vessels
2 inshore patrol vessels
1 landing ship logistics
1 replenishment oiler
1 hydrographic survey and diving support vessel

Even a small navy like NZ has a depth of experience and professionalism. A ship at sea is intrinsically a dangerous operation. Ships are lost by even the most capable and competent. All hands were saved. That is a fact the crew can be proud of.

While obviously bad, I feel I should point out this wasn’t a combat vessel. In fact it was purchased second hand from a civilian company, and was used for diving and other research purposes.
Not being designed for combat likely means fewer watertight compartments and less redundancy in damage control measures.

Though expensive, ship can be replaced. Losing crew would have been catastrophe and thankfully that did not happen.
