Trump and Vance seem very upset with being fact-checked. Maybe lie less?

  2. As it turns out, the things they say fail to pass the vital litmus test known as “truth”

  3. When one candidate or side is really offended or traumatized by fact-checking, its probably a sign you’re being lied to and shouldn’t vote for them.

  4. Instead of just serving as a mouthpiece for nonsense, the 4th estate is (finally) doing their job of holding politicians to account for their obvious lies on behalf of the public.

This is just common sense, and it will continue to resonate with people. You can’t let a bully shame you into compliance with their agenda. There have to be boundaries.

  5. The GOP has been uninterested in facts since Reagan. Their entire approach is to view government as inherently corrupt and incompetent and once elected they do everything they can to prove it. Meanwhile they manage to convince people with room temperature IQ’s to vote for them because “the other side does too much for people of color/immigrants/jewish people/unwed teenage mothers/welfare queens/etc”. What is even worse is that Trump’s GOP has convinced some of their idiot hate-filled followers to view Democrats as pedo-trans-groomers (or some other bizarre nonsense).

Fuck the GOP, Fox News, NewsMax, and all their voters. They would gladly watch the world burn as long as they win.

  6. To tell a manababy that they are wrong is the worst kind of disrespect they can receive in their *mind*.

    Let’s **not** vote for manbabies.

Clearly they both subscribe to the ancient belief that the facts should never get in the way of a good story. In this case the ‘story’ is the torrent of lies that they tell the gullible followers of Vince McMahon that seem to make up the lion’s share of their voters.

  8. I would never ever ever vote for a candidate who refused to be fact-checked.

    That’s why I’m a Democrat.

Well, OK, it’s not the only reason.

  9. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/columnist/2024/10/03/debate-fact-check-trump-vance-lies/75483028007/) reduced by 88%. (I’m a bot)

    > While there had been plenty of chatter about not fact-checking the candidates, as the moderators of the ABC News debate did with Trump last month, the rules published by CBS News before the debate did not rule out moderators offering clarifying comments.

    > Trump's campaign sent the message as the debate continued, posting video of Vance's exchange with the moderators on social media while claiming, "They got so annoyed that they cut off his mic.”

    > Political analyst Brit Hume offered this on the channel after the debate was over: "The moderators were obnoxious – and made it feel like three-on-one on Vance – and Vance was just fine." Trump's camp quickly circulated a video of that, too, on social media.

They do not care about reality, and neither do their supporters, so there is no incentive to stop lyimg.

  11. Unlucky_Clover on

Vance said recently it’s up to others to fact check him and he’s crying about being fast checked. GTFO

  12. If they didn’t lie, what would they have ?

Vance said Trump saved Obamacare. Seriously. He said that. With a straight face. He also refused – like every other in office republican- to concede Trump lost 2020.

Fucking liars. Led by the biggest liar in us political history.

  13. When your campaign (and, in fact, your entire persona) is predicated on lies, then getting fact checked is a direct attack on your campaign.

  14. The way these MAGA creeps react one would think fact checking is a bad thing! We the people are all subject to make errors, I am as prone to that as anyone alive. We need to stand behind what we think and say, it’s a question of honor in a free society.

Honest people should be able to withstand a fact check, and when called out either be able to defend their own claim vigorously with verifiable references or otherwise politely say they miss-spoke and thanks for the correction.

That’s not so hard, it’s a mature and honorable way of handling a potential gaffe. It could happen to anyone.

An election is ultimately about public policy and community goals, in the coming days we are delegating immense power to people who are intended to carry out our policy. We can’t just hand this responsibility over to a pack of liars. They work for us, not the other way around. They don’t just get to dictate our reality and steal the power of the office for their own purposes. We don’t have to stand for that.

Anyone who complains about being fact checked is claiming that they have a right to deceive us (the citizens of these United States and BTW also their employers) and they are exercising that right to deceive.

We don’t have to accept it. We don’t have to tolerate it. Don’t bullshit the boss.

Remember the good old days where people used to revile politicians because they lied about stuff?

Now we’re just making it up as they go along and people cheer.

If you can fact check an interview then fact check a debate. If they want to spout off without accountability they can record themselves and post it. If they are taking advantage of the audience of third party media, they have to live in reality.

It’s because there’s no truth in them. When they lie they speak their native tongue.

  18. Maybe lie less ? But they wouldn’t have anything to say. That would be a good thing. VOTE BLUE straight down the ballot.

  19. KrookedDoesStuff on

Republicans are more upset with fact checks than the fact these idiots are lying.

Let’s say that, for whatever reason, that you have agreed to a debate with no fact checking. If you do get fact checked, it may annoy you, but if you are a self aware and minimally intelligent person, you just let it slide and don’t call attention to it. Because complaining about it is a bad look for you. But if you are a lying, disreputable snowflake, you immediately object to not being able to lie with impunity and then continue to throw a hissy fit in the media for days afterward. All because you wanted to tell lies without being challenged. MAGA folks somehow think that shitting yourself in public and then intentionally wallowing in it is some kind of power move.

  21. They don’t care. They’re playing to their base and their base alone. As long as they have a horde of morons believing every sleazy sales tactic they employ, they’re thinking they’ll be just fine.

  22. If any nominee wouldn’t be able to pass a fact-check about what they’re running for I would have some doubts about voting for them.

Sad part is that fact-check is needed for someone running to be the second most powerful individual in the US…. think about it…complete insanity.

  23. In effect that’s the same as asking them not to speak. Because lying is their only game.

  24. I’m surprised this isn’t echoed by all reasonably serious news anchors and panelists whenever they discuss this talking point. How did fact-checking become something that a candidate can get upset about and people act like that is acceptable?

So journalists should gladly allow political candidates to lie their asses off and at no time point out that they are in fact lying? If that happens then a good portion of what journalists are supposed to do becomes unnecessary.

Journalists should be climbing over each other to point out when these folks are lying since that’s part of their duty of keeping the public informed. They should take offence whenever Trump and others says this and repeatedly point out that someone that’s telling the truth should have no issue with people fact-checking them.

  25. There’s zero benefit to the public to not have fact checking be the mandatory default for televised debates

  26. They should be doing the fact checking themselves, before they lie and commit to statement.

    That’s the way it works.
