How weak their claims were weak and we’re giving them away to a Chinese ally…

> Britain later apologised for forcibly removing more than 1,000 islanders from the entire archipelago and promised to hand the islands to Mauritius when they were no longer needed for strategic purposes.
Next step would be to hold those who are responsible for the state-organized genocide of Chagossians accountable.

I wonder what that claim and decision were based on. Mauritius is 2,150 kilometers away.

I wonder if this will affect the .io domain. .IO is the British Indian Ocean Territories, including the Chagos Islands. The domain is also very popular and generates quite a bit of income for the company that manages it. Minor thing over all, but possibly the closest most people will ever come to interacting with these islands is through the .io domain.
This is pretty big news, especially considering how reliant the Americans are on the base there.

I am wondering if Britain also factored in climate change into this. Hand them over now knowing that these island might not even exist anymore due to climate change. Do it now while it might show some kind of good publicity.

Many British nationalists and some American hawks (though not the Biden administration) are criticizing this move, saying Mauritius is too close of an ally to China. However India who is no friend of China backs this move and says Mauritius is actually an ally of India.
Genuine disagreement that can be dealt with in talks when a more conservative UK government comes to power or an actual conflict in interests?

Good. Fuck the UK for holding onto their colonialism. The UK is literally founded on slavery, genocide, and colonialism… The UK was operating literal concentration camps in East Africa into the 1960s… This is a step in the right direction.
*It’s fact that the UK enslaved and colonized billions of people world wide. Sorry you UK you guys are historically the baddies.

What happened to the Chagosians is pretty disgusting. Forcibly deported from the island into the UK to live in poverty – and were only granted the right to apply for UK citizenship in 2002. No self-determination despite being the actual inhabitants of the place, and lose their homes because the UK handed it to the Americans to use as a military base.

People from Chaos were not asked about it. So basically one colonial power ceding to another colonial power.

There was a multi-part Behind the Bastards on Chagos. Interesting listen and I hope this means that the natives are allowed to go back.
