    >The Virginias are too large for the shallow waters of the Australian coast,” Mr Keating said and claim their acquisition would not enhance Australia’s security capabilities.

We dont use Submarine in our shallow waters we send them to the Indian ocean and the SCS as we have been doing since we had the Oberon Class. The Collins wasnt designed around “Australia’s defence” it was designed around having better range and endurance than other diesel electric submarines of the time which suited Australia’s needs. The point of the Attack Class was trying to get a conventional submarine to have the better range and endurance of an SSN which failed because at the point just go for a Nuclear Power Submarine. The Virginias have better range, endurance, speed and payload than any submarine Australia has ever had and better than any submarine you will find in the Pacific that why our Navy wants them

  2. Keating is a flog who’s in Chinas pocket.

AUKUS is the single best thing to happen to Australia’s submarine fleet in the history of the RAN.

Think about it. As an island nation we have one of the longest coastlines and largest EEZ of ANY COUNTRY on earth. Not only this but the vast majority of our naval forces are based out of our southern states. This results in exceedingly long transit distances to cover the Australian coastline, let alone anywhere else.

Nuclear submarines are the only form of submarine that has the speed, range and endurance to be able to cover these distances and stay on station for any meaningful length of time.

Now take this and move it from the Australian coastline to any number of critical sea lanes that our country is depending on the ensure the delivery of critical goods that we ship internationally or receive from international sources.

Keating is pissed that we’re going nuclear, he’s pissed we’re continuing to align ourselves with the UK and US. He’s pissed he never managed to pull it off during his time in parliament.

As for not being able to operate nuclear subs in shallow waters, I’m pretty sure that they operate just fine in the Mediterranean Sea, the Arabian Gulf or the SCS .
