‘Record-setting’ number: Edmonton celebrates increase in housing starts

  1. Contrast this to Ontario where it’s just a never ending stream of excuses for why something can’t be done. Edmonton has the same interest rates (Ford’s favourite scapegoat), the same immigration and growth pressures, similar trades and materials availability, and yet gets the job done. All that’s needed is politicians who are willing to overrule the nimbys and busybodies, slash through the mountains of bullshit red tape, and let people build housing where people want to buy it.

Ironically, it’s the notoriously progressive Edmonton city council (mayor is a former liberal minister) that has done this— this shouldn’t be an ideological or partisan issue, it’s just what works.

  2. People are acting like building houses is somehow going to drop the price. There’s no way the industry will let that happen. You can build anything you want, if I can’t afford to buy one, it’s a moot point.
