  1. I really think Ford needs some advisers to tell him about[ induced demand.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAezAGogWOI) Building More roads as a tool to reduce congestion generally just lead to increase congestion as improving car based infrastructure generates more traffic instead spreading it more evenly etc.

  2. This is a massive undertaking and probably the most expensive infrastructure project in Ontario’s history… just to avoid the 407? If you really wanted to have fast car access between Brampton and Scarborough (for some reason) then it would make more sense to build a highway between the 401 and the 407.

  3. How much Crown money is this guy going to waste? Tunnels are stupid expensive to build, and always run into problems, because no matter how good your survey is, it can’t tell you everything about what’s underground, so you will be surprised once you start digging.

Even if it is built, it’s also not going to provide much relief unless it’s use is restricted to vehicle types other than single occupancy vehicles, like say as a public transit corridor. We know of course that Ford would never consider that, so a few years after it’s built, it’ll be as clogged as the 401 is now.

  4. You know what would carry even more long distance traffic Doug?

    Trains.

Every time this guy attempts to solve a problem, he chooses the worst option.

  5. I think it’s a good idea. 401 is always packed. It makes commuting dreadful. Even at 7pm there’s traffic! The population is growing, we need new highways or else the grid lock will continue.

  6. What I don’t get, is why infrastructure is so expensive here, there’s no way this would be under 50 billion(probably closer to 100), but if you did a train system, it would also be a similarly high cost. No matter what you’re trying to build, it’s like 5 times the cost it would have been 10 years ago, which makes any kind of ambitious infrastructure projects impossible. Hard to not argue that we are a society in decline when all we do is repair old infrastructure, compared to the great infrastructure projects of 50 years ago..

  7. Doing some quick napkin math using the Boston big dig and Seattle Route 99 tunnel for cost/km ranges, adjusted for inflation and currency conversion into 2024 CAD$. That gives me best case 35B for a 30KM route using Route 99 as the basis(note: it is only 4 lanes). Worst case(Big Dig) is 190B for a 70KM route. For 50KM, the range is 57B-136B.

  8. Some companies are going to get stinking rich from this and we’ll probably be 2 or 3 administrations from now before it ever gets finished.
