What are those projectiles powered with…. They seem really slow . Do they just go straight up and fall down randomly?

I know that destroying the missiles / rockets in flight is better than having them impact, but I’ve always wondered what it’s like after — when all the debris is falling from the sky. I still remember older footage that showed a giant piece falling down. Are there special considerations they implement to prevent casualties from that?
