In short:

The federal government has unveiled its much-anticipated overhaul of the aged care system, which if passed could see providers fined more than $1.5 million for the most serious breaches.

Advocates and peak bodies say they’re waiting for more detail about how the increased protections for older Australians will work.

What’s next?

The proposed legislation, which has bipartisan support, will now be examined by a Senate committee

  1. And [here](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-12-22/royal-commission-estimates-40-pc-aged-care-residents-face-abuse/13007864) is an article talking about the findings of the royal commission into Aged Care a few years ago:

    * 39.2% experienced some form of abuse.
    * 1 in 20 experienced physical abuse.
    * 30.8% experienced neglect.

    So it’s really horrible. This type of reform and legislation is really needed and overdue. The elderly need to be protected better. And good on everyone who spoke up like Yvonne and Vivian. Incredibly brave and important thing to do.
