  1. Hello, I’m Emma from Nikkei Asia’s audience engagement team. here’s an excerpt from the linked article above:

*China is moving forward with legislation to require basic military training for high school and university students, part of a push under Chinese President Xi Jinping to place a greater emphasis on national security in education.*

*Lawmakers will review a draft amendment to the National Defense Education Law at a meeting of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, China’s top legislature, through Friday. The bill underwent a first reading in April, and could be passed by the end of the year.*

*Under the proposed changes, national educational authorities and local military authorities will guide marching and marksmanship drills at high schools and universities. Local governments will be responsible for costs.*

*Universities that fail to comply could face criminal charges. Certain schools in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Fujian province are already conducting drills using automatic rifles, rocket launchers and armored vehicles.*

*Xi sees national security as a top priority amid concerns that tensions with the U.S. over Taiwan and the South China Sea could lead to conflict. He aims to build a world-leading military with greater capabilities in the nuclear, space and cyber realms.*

I have a feeling this is going to raise youth suicide rates across China.

On top of an already cut-throat academic culture and expectations, now the students have to do military training.

Everything about that blurb describes what’s wrong with China.

  5. This is likely to put a mask on their spy network. With everyone having the same background. They can plant these people in other countries with more cover…

  6. This is not belligerent or militaristic at all, no.

China only has peaceful intentions for its neighbours.

  7. So pointless, just force them to do military service for a year instead. Nobody will learn shit in the ‘basic military training’

  8. > Local governments will be responsible for costs.

Ah the same local governments that are near bankrupt and teetering on collapse? A bold strategy cotton, let’s see what happens.

The intention is a bit scary, but the implementation near guarantees that this will be a waste of money and a scandal.

Commies and spending other people’s money, name a more iconic duo.

  9. Every time you buy something from China, you are helping fund the military that will one day attack us and our allies. Stop buying things from China. Demand that your representatives support heavy tariffs on goods from China.

  10. Given the “let it rot” trend this could backfire big time, they have a sizeable number of unemployed uni graduates who are vocally dissatisfied with China as it is thence “let it rot” and they want to give them military training…. absolutely nothing could go wrong.

  11. China “military” is a joke. They all learn how to do drill and ceremony, that’s it. The Overtly Evil Communist Party would never teach its citizens how to actually fight effectively. China would be a democracy in less than 3 years if they did that.
