As someone in my 40’s who was maybe 15 when i first got dial up internet. And grew through MySpace etc etc… I can honestly say that whilst there are some positive aspects to social media… it has more harm than good for humanity. Also I feel that kids no longer go out and play and socialise. They find it harder to make friends as they can dig their face into a phone…

Anyway, that’s my opinion…

There really needs to be a maximum age as well. Radicalised grand parents are a much bigger problem than kids.

Maybe, instead of the Government fixing this problem, the parents should enable Parental Control on devices they give kids?

You know… Parents doing that parenting thing?

Remember when the gov thought they really needed to protect us from a Sydney stabbing video, but couldnt and nothing happened. Everyone was fine…then funnily enough…they didnt make a sound about the trump shooting video.

They dont care about kids, its a guise to establish control.

For those commenting, I’d be interested to know your approximate age… i wonder whether the age brackets that have only ever known about social media reject this more than those who knew a life before the advent of socials

  5. I used to support LABOR , they can fuck right off now ..sick to death of this government overreach in this Country ..not just LABOR but those other fuckwits as well …get fucked

Most parents now are millennials so the government needs to do the parenting for them.

Doubt this has shit with “protecting kids” given that they already said they dgaf about gambling ads to protect the likes of stokes and packer profits

  8. Why don’t social media platforms have accounts linked to the parents account where everything is doubly approved my them. Ie. they control who they follow and add. Plus can see messages etc.

  9. As a child (30 odd years ago) my parents never hovered over yo make sure I was doing the right thing. There were guide line and a smack on the arse if I strayed to far out of those lines. With devices these days you have to be pretty much standing over your kid 24/7 to make sure they don’t stumble onto something they shouldn’t. It doesn’t matter what it is, there’s adult content masquerading as child content everywhere. The point I’m making is that parent has gotten harder, kids don’t just have access to their parents now, they’ve got access to millions of voices. Sometimes parents are to blame but it’s a cop out continuously say oh the parents just didnt parent right. So, so many more factors.

I agree it can be very harmful for kids. I’ve used tools to restrict my kids from it and monitor what they do use. It’s easy enough get around age restrictions, this is really something parents should be monitoring imo
I mean FB etc has had a minimum age of 13 for years but that doesn’t stop younger kids getting on it. I’d be interested to see how they plan to restrict it.

They’ve said they will set the age limit somewhere between 13-16. From my perspective as a parent, blocking them from getting on it under 13 was easy, it’s between 13-16ish that we’ve seen it cause the most disruption and I’ve had heavy monitoring and restrictions on it. It’s not even just the strangers they might encounter on it that are the problem, it’s also other kids their age – from school, from nearby schools etc.

I don’t know what the answer is here, but I don’t think solely a flat out ban is it. Parents need to be taking most of the responsibility.

Ban kids off social media and gaming and place an age limit of 14 – 16 on it

Still allowing gambling advertising, still allowing 10 year olds to be jailed

We are doing it to protect children

Bull crap, they are doing it to distract everyone how gutless they are.

  12. Thanks. Do you mind sorting out house prices and lobbying groups next?

I wouldn’t mind a non compromised anti corruption commission too, but I know you’re busy.

  13. If you don’t agree with this you probably don’t have small children or your children have already grown up.

I’m all for government IDs for social media. I’d much rather prefer to know there’s a real person behind a post rather than a Russian operative, a Nigerian scammer or a Chinese fraudster. Except, no way social media giants will implement any kind of verification or filters for end users, because they thrive on that shit.

  15. How about you start restricting home ownership?

You know, do something that no one else can actually control

  16. Pristine_Car_6253 on

Weird that it has to be a law and parents aren’t taking this seriously and protecting their own children

  17. And it doesn’t matter. The cat is out of the bag. Albo needs to focus on shit that does matter.

  18. The internet is basically undefeated vs people trying to censor it.

Many monies has been wasted in such pursuits.

  19. Having the legislation is good to keep people accountable with actual punishment, but unfortunately people can still lie about their age.

This one smells. It’s Deflecting from other obvious problems. Gambling add control will now be forgotten. Over-Immigration will be forgotten. Housing and cost of living issues will be forgotten. How did we vote these idiots into power? (maybe if we all focus on the footy, the problems will go away)

  21. Virtual-Gene2265 on

None of this will make an ounce of difference. Society as we knew it has changed there isn’t no going back, and you can’t put it back in a box. Society as we knew it is generally fucked.

  22. hillbillyheathen22 on

When i saw this i thought by age limit they meant older folks. Age requirement would be a better way to say it

  23. You know I am not totally against this, too much misinformation and brain washing on social media now.
