    Most combat footage from World War One was faked. They would go over the top, take a position, or die trying, and then re-enact it for the camera crews. Just with a lot less death

  2. As a general rule of thumb, if a WW1 film shows people ‘dying’ then it’s most likely staged. The War Office in the UK, for instance, only wanted footage released that would support the war effort and raise morale. Stuff managed to slip through, however, and there’s still authentic battlefield footage out there. This clip shows (from 23 seconds onwards) British soldiers running across open fields to take the Hawthorn Redoubt on the first day of the Somme. If you look closely, you can see people falling:
