  1. Context for “Federal Rebels”:

    Myanmar/Burma was supposed to be a federal nation with autonomy for ethnic regions under the [1947 Panglong Agreement](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panglong_Agreement). In reality, the country is a unitary republic where the military has significant control over politics. It got worse when the army overthrew the civilian government in February 2021 over “election fraud.”

    The vast majority of ethnic armies/militias such as Kachin Independence Army, Arakan Army, and Karen (Kayin) National Liberation Army fight for a federal nation.
