This was taken during the “First Army Maneuvers,” hosted in August of 1939. Visible in the foreground are some of the numerous foreign observers who flocked to attend. These included military representatives from Great Britain, Italy, Nazi Germany, and Imperial Japan to name a few. Just a few weeks after these exercises were completed, Germany invaded Poland.

  2. Early US and UK tank doctrine was absolutely nuts and even by the end of the war they never really threw off the shackles of its limitations.

    These early ‘cavalry’ tanks (or the UK cruisers) were outdated before they started production.
