  1. The civilian population of Abadan was 300,000 in 1980.

    Due to the war, the 1986 census recorded only 6 people.

    The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 231,476 people in 66,470 households.

  2. Lions led by donkeys podcast did a great series on this war. I didn’t know much about it. One thing will always stick in my mind now though, they electrified a swamp and killed thousands!

    This conflict is criminally under covered. It was a massive conflict that set the region up for conflict for years. This was a full on fight akin to WW1. Why WW1? Well despite tanks and a “modern” airforce both sides found themselves bogged down in tenches. Iran reportedly using human wave tactics with Iraq trying hopeless at any charges.
