The [Foundation for Energy Security and Innovation](https://fas.org/initiative/fesi/) is now a reality: an affiliated but autonomous non-profit organization authorized by Congress to support the mission of the U.S. Department of Energy and to accelerate the commercialization of energy technologies. FESI’s establishment was a vital first step, but its value depends on what happens next.
In order to maximize FESI’s impact, the board and staff should think big from the start, identify unique high-leverage opportunities to complement DOE’s work, and systematically build the capacity to realize them.

* how FESI can act as catalyst and incubator of initiatives that drive public-private technology partnerships, and
* how FESI can develop lean and highly-networked operational capabilities to maximize performance
