Not everyone can afford a $50,000 car. Our leaders should remember that before hitting Chinese EVs with sky-high tariffs

We have to match the American tariff wall. We also made significant investments in our own industries that this would significantly undermine.

We also don’t even have the power grid necessary for explosive EV growth in the short term. This is one of the instances where tariffs are likely necessary to fight EVs that are artificially cheaper from China due to lack of work and environmental regulations

  2. Unless of course, they don’t want lower income people to be able to OWN cars. All the Legacy manufacturers stopped manufacturing the inexpensive gas models and aren’t building inexpensive EVs, and the Government wants to make inexpensive Chinese EVs expensive.

Hitting Chinese ev imports is more about preserving the western way of life and western values than it is about the tax revenues from imports

  4. Yeah sure, who cares about the environment when we need to protect our genius $50 billion investment and big auto?

    > While EVs save drivers money in almost every situation, thanks to significantly lower fuel costs, there are still too few affordable EVs on Canadian dealer lots.

If the up-front cost of EVs is such a big barrier to a choice that’s better for the environment _and_ cheaper in the long term, then the obvious solution is to have the government provide low-interest, long-term financing options for EVs. Make them available for a similar monthly price to what a comparable gas-powered car would cost, rather than providing a small subsidy that still leaves these cars too expensive for most buyers.
