I found this interesting, curious to see if others are interested in this depth of geekery. Solar panels use glass that is more transparent than standard window glass, and it generally has some extra hardening and anti- reflection features. It is not extremely simple to manufacture. The article mentions some details about solar glass in passing, and also mentions that the factories are planning to use recycled content, which is great news. I had no doubt that solar panels will be recycled at a high rate, now that they are widespread, because most of them contain significant amounts of silver. The fact that the glass will actually get recycled is great.

If to learn more about solar glass, the search term to start with is “low iron solar glass”. Trace amounts of iron gives glass the subtle green tint most of it has.
